"He first extablishes Clodia's centrality, then attacks Clodia to diminish her credibility, then talks about how Caelius is good" this is the progression

ask: do u have to link back to the question all the time

In the HSC papers:

  • Continuers
    • Question 3 (15 marks) - Cicero
    • Question 6 (15 marks) - Vergil
  • Extension
    • Question 3 (10 marks) - all authors
      • the difference between Continuers and Extension is in Extension they usually give you two authors in the same question. But not always (e.g. 2025 HSC)

Format:

  • You are provided with one or more extracts from the prescribed text.

  • Your response is expected to be around 3 pages of an examination writing booklet – approximately 400 words.

  • These questions are usually analyse:

    • Identify components and the relationship between them.
      • How the author develops the message across the extracts
      • Briefly situate each extract in its context
      • Use of connecting/cohesion devices - similarly, in contrast, moreover, despite this, etc.
      • Linking two 'uses of language' together - tricolon of imperative verbs vs just a tricolon
      • e.g. A → B → C
        • how does B develop A, how does A link to B, how does C change A
    • Draw out and relate implications
      • Implications - purpose/audience - why? So what?
      • Cicero uses X to portray Clodia as Y → Cicero presents X to create Y effect for Z purpose
      • Cicero uses comedic characters to present Clodia as a prostitute to reduce the effect of her testimony in the eyes of the jury
      • (the left text says 'Intention')
  • Cover all the extract

  • Think of ER as 3 x 5 mark SA

    • okokok so like if you think of them like 3 five markers, then that's most of the job done. as in, answer a 5 marker on this extract, on the next extract, on the third extract
    • there's like more to do to refine but like that's most of it
  • ER =/= essay

    • Intros - optional but recommended; either way they are short
    • Paragraphs - 3
    • Conclusions - optional; short if present
  • Two approaches for structure:

    • Extract-by-extract - safe
    • Thematic - requires more planning
      • Para 1 - theme A (e.g. extract 1 and 2)
      • Para 2 - theme B (e.g. ext 2 and 3)
      • Para 3 - theme C (e.g. ext 1, 2 and 3)

Marking Criteria

  • Constructs a logical and cohesive response, focusing on relevant points
    • Use of linking devices between extracts, can be as simple as starting a parag with "in contrast"
    • Use Paragraphs
    • Plan your response, decide on key points → helps with logical/coherent.
      • Sometimes you do see these responses where they write and they get to the second extract and the great idea hits them and they start shifting to a slightly different idea
    • Alignment
    • present the extracts in chronological order

Example Question

Analyse how Cicero characterises Clodia in these extracts to serve his rhetorical purposes.

rhetorical purposes = to defend Caelius

characterises Clodia

  • traits/behaviours/morals
  • in comparison to ancestors - Clodia's ancestors

just try extract by extract for this one

introduction can just be a 2 sentence thing answering the question
