In a temple, Aeneas asks the god Apollo for guidance on where they should seek out a new homeland. After some omens, the god replies.
'da propriam, Thymbraee, domum; da moenia fessis
et genus et mansuram urbem; serva altera Troiae
Pergama, reliquias Danaum atque immitis Achilli.
quem sequimur? quoue ire iubes? ubi ponere sedes?
da, pater, augurium atque animis inlabere nostris.'
vix ea fatus eram: tremere omnia visa repente,
liminaque laurusque dei, totusque moveri
mons circum et mugire adytis cortina reclusis.
"give a permanent home, Apollo; give walls and a legacy and a city that will stay to the tired; guard the second citadels of Troy, the leavings of the greeks and severe achilles. Who do we follow? Or where do you order us to go? where do you resolve to put down? father, give an omen and we worked at our minds." this scarcely having been said: suddenly everything was seen to tremble, and the entrances and bay crown of the god, and the whole mountain [was seen] around to be disturbed and groan, the sanctuary war disclosed by the tripod of apollo.
