pattern:
b) tends to ask about literary techniques
c) asks for similarity to text read

  • Identify an example of personification in this extract
    • Austrus iactantibus
    • mors venit, victoria venit
  • describe TWO ways this extract is thematically and/or stylistically similar to your prescribed text: Horace Satire I.9
    • thematically
      • Maecenas is mentioned just as he is in Sat.1.9
      • both texts contrast one's current vs desired status
      • both are commenting on mundane events potentially inspired by Horace's own experiences & views on the world
      • description/critique of people complaining about their position in life
    • stylistically
      • uses short/truncated sentences (stichomythia) and idiomatic phrases to create a conversational tone
        • "dialogue" is too general, specify what sort of dialogue in particular
    • avoid things that could equally be said of Vergil
    • the more specific, the better. e.g. mentioning meter is bad because a lot of poets do this

stuff we did in the hour before exam

  • "non faciam" bruh moment/sudden disappointment
  • quick dialogue: builds a sense of urgency
  • modality: boor is determined/high modality, "i WILL get this done", horace is toned down, "yeah um i might have to leave..."
  • when Horace defends, it's the only time when he's really engaged in the conversation
